LAS SIRENAS

Written by Anatalia Vallez
Directed by Rubén Gabriel Hernández

Mermaids and Chicana revolutionaries are two things one would not say are necessarily complementary. That is, until you've experienced Las Sirenas. With themes of community, commentary on violence against women, and highlighting the role of Chicana revolutionaries throughout history, Las Sirenas is a play that speaks to that moment.

Las Sirenas follows the life of Josephine, a young Chicana fighting for equity on campus while balancing interpersonal relationships and power dynamics. When a student protest goes wrong, the organizing group she is a part of faces unforeseen consequences. Stakes rise when a supernatural mermaid comes to life as the reincarnation of a forgotten Chicana organizer.
